Powwow 2009
scheduled forJuly 10th,
11th, 12th!
Residents and visitors were treated to the re-awaking of a Nation of people
during the two previous teaching and Powwow days in Flat Bay. Both gatherings
were deemed a great success as numerous people came to Flat Bay in celebration
of our Culture.
First Nation's people in the area had the opportunity, during both Powwows,
to meet with traditional teachers and to take in sharing workshops on areas of
aboriginal life such as Medicine Wheel teachings, Sweatlodge, Mi'kmaq song and
chants, Naming ceremony, Overcoming hardships and Storytelling. These initial
teachings will be the building blocks for the re-awakening of traditional ways
of life of the Mi'kmaq and an introduction for many people to the way of life of
their ancestors.
These Powwows started with Grand Entry, a feast of sound, color, movement,
and tradition, that held people spellbound. Throughout the first day of the
inaugural Powwow, a traditional Mi'kmaq Wedding took place, the wedding was the
first of its kind in Bay St. George in modern times. The subsequent Powwow
offered, a very special, traditional baptism Visitors and family alike enjoyed
being a part of such a special event.
First Nations people from across Canada travelled to the event to share and
to renew family ties and friendship.
Powwow 2009 will take place in Flat Bay for a third year.
